Christa Torrens is a PhD student working with Michael Gooseff to explore the effects of permafrost degradation on freshwater ecology in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. She has an MS in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana, where she studied freshwater hydroecology. Originally from western New York state, she has lived in most regions of the US and has traveled widely for school, work and just for fun. She has worked in stream systems in the Midwest and West, and looks forward to this new adventure. When not working or studying, Christa enjoys dancing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, skiing, cooking, reading and creative writing.
